Schultze Ehwald Rainey
Der Pianist Stefan Schultze und der Saxofonist Peter Ehwald kennen sich seit ihrer Studienzeit, als sie in den Bands des jeweils anderen wie zum Beispiel in Oktoposse, im Backyard Jazz Orchestra oder Stefan Schultze Large Ensemble spielten. Wie selbstverständlich kamen sie auch als Duo zusammen, um gemeinsam am Vokabular für eine Sprache im Jazz zu arbeiten. Ihnen war klar, dass, wenn sie ein weiteres Instrument dazu nehmen, es das Schlagzeug sein muss, weil das sie in ihrer Suche nach Struktur und Form in der improvisierten Musik eher unterstützt und fordert. Ihre Wahl fiel auf Tomy Rainey, mit dem New Yorker spielen sie seit 2016 im Trio. Die Exploration des Klangs im Moment seines Entstehens: Um nichts anderes scheint es Schultze, Ehwald und Rainey zu gehen. Ein Intervall vom Klavier, ein überblasener Ton vom Tenorsaxofon oder ein rhythmisches Pattern vom Becken wird zum Impuls für einen Exkurs im Flow des improvisierenden Miteinanders: intuitiv in der Haltung, differenziert in der Phrasierung und introspektiv im Timbre.

Simon Nabatov – Meeting Room
Simon Nabatov lädt zwei Musiker, die er seit vielen Jahren kennt und bewundert, zu einem „richtigen“ musikalischen Treffen ein. Nabatov hörte und traf Michael Formanek mehrmals in den frühen 80er Jahren in New York, wo Michael trotz seines jungen Alters bereits ein gefragter Bassist von internationalem Ruf war. Viel später erschien Formanek auf Nabatovs CD „Last Minute Theory“ (Clean Feed Records). Auf den belgischen Bläser Joachim Badenhorst wurde Nabatov erstmals aufmerksam, als er ihn in verschiedenen Projekten des Bassisten/Komponisten Pascal Niggenkemper hörte. „Er stand schon lange auf meiner Wunschliste für musikalische Kollaborateure“, sagt Simon. Jetzt ist der „Meeting Room“ für die musikalischen Erkundungen und Diskussionen eingerichtet, die auf den neuen Kompositionen von Simon Nabatov basieren.

Schultze Ehwald Rainey
Pianist Stefan Schultze and saxophonist Peter Ehwald have known each other since their student days, when they played in each other's bands such as Oktoposse, the Backyard Jazz Orchestra or the Stefan Schultze Large Ensemble. As a matter of course, they also came together as a duo to work together on the vocabulary for a language in jazz. It was clear to them that if they were to add another instrument, it would have to be the drums, as this would support and challenge them in their search for structure and form in improvised music. Their choice fell on Tomy Rainey, with whom they have been playing in a trio since 2016. The exploration of sound at the moment of its creation: Schultze, Ehwald and Rainey seem to be interested in nothing else. An interval from the piano, an overblown note from the tenor saxophone or a rhythmic pattern from the cymbal becomes the impulse for an excursion in the flow of improvising together: intuitive in posture, differentiated in phrasing and introspective in timbre.

Simon Nabatov invites two musicians he knows and admires since many years for a „proper“ musical meeting.
Nabatov heard and met Michael Formanek number of times in the early 80s in New York, where Michael was already an in-demand bassist of international reputation, despite his young age.
Much later Formanek appeared on Nabatov’s CD „Last Minute Theory“ (Clean Feed Records).
Nabatov first became aware of the Belgian reed player Joachim Badenhorst hearing him in various projects of the bassist/composer Pascal Niggenkemper.
„He was on my wish-list of musical collaborators for a long time now“ - says Simon.
Now the „Meeting Room“ is set up for the musical explorations and discussions, based on the new compositions by Simon Nabatov.
