Craig Taborn Solo

Der 1970 in der Motorcity Detroit geborene Craig Taborn wurde mit Anfang 20 durch die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Saxofonisten James Carter bekannt, auf dessen Alben „The Real Quietstorm“ und „Conversations With The Elders“ er außergewöhnliche improvisatorische Akzente setzte. Es folgten Aufnahmen mit Improvisator*innen wie Roscoe Mitchell, Susie Ibarra und Evan Parker sowie klangliche Experimente durch Elektronik und Samples und den Einsatz von Orgel und Moog-Synthesizer. Zwischen Avantgarde und Tradition, Ambient und der Techno-Musikszene Detroits entfalteten sich bei Taborn melodische Klangflächen, die er seit seiner ersten Solo-Aufnahme bei ECM 2001 weiterentwickelt hat. Seine Solokonzerte sind improvisatorische Entdeckungsreisen. Er selbst sagt: „Ich fange einfach an und versuche, alles, was passiert, wie etwa motivische, rhythmische oder strukturelle Details miteinander zu verbinden und die Musik aus dem Material selbst entstehen zu lassen, sowie aus dem Klang des Instruments selbst.

Joanna Duda Trio

2018 war Polen Partnerland der jazzahead! in Bremen. Damals vor sechs Jahren präsentierte sich vor allem die junge Szene. Eines der Konzerte spielte die 1983 in der polnischen Hafenstadt Gdańsk geborene Pianistin Joanna Duda – und zeigte mit ihrem 2017 gegründeten Trio Eigenschaften, die damals schon üblich waren für den jungen, polnischen Jazz, aber außerhalb Polens noch nicht so wirklich wahrgenommen wurden. Duda lässt sich mit ihrer Vorstellung einer zeitgenössischen, modernen Jazzmusik jedenfalls weder ästhetisch noch stilistisch begrenzen, mit dem Flügen, mit Synthesizer und Looper changiert sie raffiniert zwischen analogen Klängen und synthetischen Sounds. Aber auch und gerade im antizipierenden Zusammenspiel mit Bass und Schlagzeug geht es ihr darum, die verschiedenen Dichtegrade von Klang, Melodik und Rhythmik herauszuarbeiten und diese zur Grundlage für einen Stil-Mix aus Jazz und Techno, Ambient und Minimal Music, aus Improvisierter und Neuer Musik zu machen.

This was followed by recordings with improvisers such as Roscoe Mitchell, Susie Ibarra and Evan Parker as well as sonic experiments with electronics and samples and the use of organ and Moog synthesiser. Between avant-garde and traditional, ambient and the Detroit techno music scene, Taborn has developed melodic soundscapes that he has continued to develop since his first solo recording for ECM in 2001. His solo concerts are improvisational journeys of discovery. He himself says: "I just start and try to connect everything that happens, such as motivic, rhythmic or structural details, and let the music emerge from the material itself, as well as from the sound of the instrument itself.

In 2018, Poland was the partner country of jazzahead! in Bremen. Back then, six years ago, it was mainly the young scene that presented itself. One of the concerts was played by pianist Joanna Duda, born in 1983 in the Polish port city of Gdańsk - and with her trio, founded in 2017, she demonstrated characteristics that were already common for young Polish jazz at the time, but were not really recognised outside Poland. In any case, Duda's idea of contemporary, modern jazz music is neither aesthetically nor stylistically limited; with her flights, synthesiser and looper, she cleverly alternates between analogue sounds and synthetic sounds. But also and especially in the anticipatory interplay with bass and drums, she is concerned with working out the various degrees of density of sound, melody and rhythm and making them the basis for a stylistic mix of jazz and techno, ambient and minimal music, improvised and new music.
