Die südkoreanische Schlagzeugerin Sun-Mi Hong begann bereits mit zwölf Jahren in ihrem Geburtsort in In-Cheon, sich für Schlagzeug zu interessieren, was ihre Eltern zunächst nicht unterstützten, zu unsicher erschien ihnen der Traum der Tochter, Musikerin zu werden. Mit 17 Jahren nahm sie Schlagzeugunterricht und wurde vier Jahre später am Konservatorium in Amsterdam angenommen, wo sie seitdem lebt und sich als feste Größe der niederländischen Improvisationsszene etabliert hat. Die Aufnahmen mit ihrem Quintett europäischer Improvisator*innen haben bereits verschiedene Preise gewonnen. Ihr neuestes Projekt ist das BIDA Orchestra, ein Allstar-Quintett der internationalen Improvisationsszene, das im Rahmen der „Bimhuis Reflex Serie“ entstand: mit dem belgischen Keyboarder Jozef Dumoulin, der auch mit „Lilly Joel plays the Organ“ in Köln zu hören ist, dem britischen Bassisten John Edwards, der dänischen Saxofonistin Mette Rassmussen, dem US-Saxofonisten John Dikeman und dem schottischen Trompeter Alistair Payne.

The South Korean drummer Sun-Mi Hong began to take an interest in drums at the age of twelve in her hometown of In-Cheon, which her parents initially did not support, as they were too unsure of their daughter's dream of becoming a musician. At the age of 17, she took drum lessons and four years later was accepted at the conservatory in Amsterdam, where she has lived ever since and has established herself as a permanent fixture on the Dutch improvisation scene. The recordings with her quintet of European improvisers have already won various prizes.
