Peter Evans Solo

Der 1981 geborene Trompeter und Komponist Peter Evans gilt als eine der führenden Stimmen im Bereich der Solo-Improvisation in Jazz, Avantgarde und Neuer Musik. Bekannt wurde er im Quartett Mostly Other People Do The Killing und als Mitglied des International Contemporary Ensembles. Evans spielte in verschiedenen Kontexten, unter anderem mit Peter Brötzmann, Mary Halvorson, Evan Parker, Matana Roberts, Tyshawn Sorey und John Zorn. 2011 gründete er sein eigenes Label More Is More Records. Seine Konzerte wurden in der New York Times als „ein rätselhaftes Ritual aus körperlicher Anstrengung und formaler Kontrolle“ sowie als „atemberaubend und oft beunruhigend“ beschrieben. All About Jazz meinte über sein 2009 erschienenes Soloalbum „Nature/Culture“: „Evans stapelt Klangfarben und Texturen in schwindelerregender Fülle übereinander, bis jede Beziehung zum traditionellen musikalischen Universum verschwindet und der Hörer in einer Klangwelt umhergetrieben wird, die von ihrer eigenen inneren Logik bestimmt wird.“ Auf der Cologne Jazzweek stellt Evans sein 2023 erschienenes Soloalbum „In Medias Res“ vor, eine Hommage an den Trompeter Bill Dixon und dessen Erforschung der Klangmöglichkeiten des Instruments.

Lilly Joel Plays The Organ

Das belgische Duo Lilly Joel der Sängerin und Multiinstrumentalistin Lynn Cassiers und des ansonsten für seine Klangexperimente mit dem Fender Rhodes bekannten E-Pianisten Jozef Dumoulin kommt mit einem außergewöhnlichen Orgelprojekt nach Köln, das an der Kuhn-Orgel der romanischen Basilika St. Kunibert aufgeführt wird. Sie spielen Musik der Komponistin, Äbtissin, Mystikerin und Dichterin Hildegard von Bingen aus dem 12. Jahrhundert, in einer Kombination aus Gesang, Elektronik und Orgel, die Dumoulin schon als Kind spielte. Beide haben die improvisatorischen Möglichkeiten der teils monodischen Melodien Hildegard von Bingens erforscht. Ein großer Teil der Arbeit bestand darin, die richtige Herangehensweise und den richtigen Ton für diese Anordnung zu finden; zu sehen, wie diese Melodien heute klingen und was sie verlangen, und Räume zu erfinden, in denen sie sich entfalten können. Entstanden ist mit „Sibyl Of The Rhine“ als Hommage an die große Komponistin eine Klangverdichtung von hypnotischer Schönheit.

His concerts have been described in the New York Times as "an enigmatic ritual of physical exertion and formal control" and as "breathtaking and often unsettling". All About Jazz said of his 2009 solo album "Nature/Culture": "Evans stacks timbres and textures in dizzying profusion until any relationship to the traditional musical universe disappears and the listener is left drifting in a sound world governed by its own internal logic." At Cologne Jazzweek, Evans will present his 2023 solo album "In Medias Res", a tribute to trumpeter Bill Dixon and his exploration of the instrument's sonic possibilities.

The Belgian duo Lilly Joel of singer and multi-instrumentalist Lynn Cassiers and electric pianist Jozef Dumoulin, otherwise known for his sound experiments with the Fender Rhodes, is coming to Cologne with an unusual organ project that will be performed on the Kuhn organ in the Romanesque basilica of St Kunibert. They will play music by the 12th century composer, abbess, mystic and poet Hildegard von Bingen, in a combination of vocals, electronics and organ, which Dumoulin already played as a child. Both have explored the improvisational possibilities of Hildegard von Bingen's melodies, some of which are monodic. A large part of the work consisted of finding the right approach and the right tone for this arrangement; to see how these melodies sound today and what they demand, and to invent spaces in which they can unfold. The result is "Sibyl Of The Rhine", a tribute to the great composer, a sound condensation of hypnotic beauty.
