Ambrose Akinmusire Quartet

Der 1982 in Oakland geborene kalifornische Trompeter Ambrose Akinmusire präsentiert sein neues Album „Owl Song“, das erste einer geplanten Album-Trilogie mit unterschiedlichen Instrumentierungen und Produktionsansätzen. Bei diesem Projekt steht für Akinmusire der kammermusikalische Ansatz im Vordergrund, für den er eine bewusste Reduktion gewählt hat, um innerhalb vorgegebener Grenzen zu improvisieren. Akinmusire wurde vom Saxofonisten Steve Coleman entdeckt, der ihn als 19-jährigen für eine Tournee in seine Band Five Elements holte. Er besuchte das „Thelonious Monk Institute“ und wurde von Wayne Shorter und Herbie Hancock gefördert. 2007 gewann er die „Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition“ und wurde 2010 von Blue Note Records unter Vertrag genommen. 2015 spielte er auf Kendrick Lamars Album „To Pimp A Butterfly“ und veröffentlichte zu den Black Lives Matter-Protesten in den USA seine Alben „Origami Harvest“ und „On The Tender Spot Of Every Calloused Moment“. Derzeit ist er der künstlerische Leiter des „Herbie Hancock Institute Of Jazz“. 

Samora Pinderhughes & EOS Chamber Orchestra

Samora Pinderhughes gehört einer jungen Generation von Singer/Songwritern in den USA an. Seine Songs geben sich multistilistisch und sind ästhetisch divers, sie vereinen US-amerikanische Roots-Music, afroamerikanischen Jazz und Blues mit Pop, Rock und Folk. Seine Lyrics klingen poetisch und radikal zugleich, sie sprechen oftmals von der Notwendigkeit zu Veränderungen und thematisieren gesellschaftliche Missstände. Im Mittelpunkt steht seine klare, recht hohe Stimme, die vom Timbre gleichermaßen scharfakzentuiert wie verhangen ist und eine breite Palette an emotionalen Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten zulässt. Arbeitet er gerne mit jungen Jazzmusiker*innen zusammen – wie zum Beispiel mit seiner Flöte spielenden Schwester Elena oder dem Altsaxofonisten Immanuel Wilkins –, so wird er bei der Cologne Jazzweek vom EOS Chamber Orchestra begleitet. Hendrika Entzian, die sich seit diesem Jahr die Leitung dieses Ensembles mit Susanne Blumenthal teil, will mit ihren Arrangements den sowieso schon emotional aufgeladenen Songs Pinderhughes’ eine noch größere Tiefgründigkeit geben, um sie dem Publikum zugänglicher und eingängiger zu machen.

Ambrose Akinmusire Quartet

Born in Oakland in 1982, Californian trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire presents his new album "Owl Song", the first of a planned album trilogy with different instrumentations and production approaches. In this project, Akinmusire's focus is on a chamber music approach, for which he has chosen a deliberate reduction in order to improvise within given boundaries. Akinmusire was discovered by saxophonist Steve Coleman, who brought him into his band Five Elements for a tour at the age of 19. He attended the Thelonious Monk Institute and was educated by Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. In 2007 he won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition and was signed by Blue Note Records in 2010. In 2015 he played on Kendrick Lamar's album "To Pimp A Butterfly" and released his albums "Origami Harvest" and "On The Tender Spot Of Every Calloused Moment" to coincide with the Black Lives Matter protests in the USA. He is currently the artistic director of the Herbie Hancock Institute Of Jazz.

Samora Pinderhughes & EOS Chamber Orchestra

Samora Pinderhughes belongs to a young generation of singer/songwriters in the USA. His songs are multi-stylistic and aesthetically diverse, combining US roots music, African-American jazz and blues with pop, rock and folk. His lyrics sound poetic and radical at the same time, they often speak of the need for change and address social grievances. His clear, rather high voice takes centre stage, with a timbre that is both sharply accentuated and overcast, allowing for a wide range of emotional expression. While he enjoys working with young jazz musicians - such as his flute-playing sister Elena or alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins - he will be accompanied by the EOS Chamber Orchestra at Cologne Jazzweek. Hendrika Entzian, who has shared the direction of this ensemble with Susanne Blumenthal since this year, aims to give Pinderhughes' already emotionally charged songs an even greater depth with her arrangements in order to make them more accessible and catchy for the audience.
