Stemeseder & Lillinger Quartett – Umbra II (feat. Peter Evans & Joe Sanders)

„Umbra“ ist der zweite Teil der Album-Trilogie des österreichischen Pianisten, Elektronikmusikers und Komponisten Elias Stemeseder und des deutschen Schlagzeugers und Gründers von Plaist Records, Christian Lillinger, das für „genrefreie“ Musik steht. Auch bei „Umbra“ werden historische Instrumente der Barockzeit wie das Spinett klanglich verfremdet und erweitert, als Erforschung der physikalischen Prinzipien von Zeit und Raum. „Umbra“ ist als Duo plus Gäste konzipiert. Dazu haben Stemeseder und Lillinger den New Yorker Trompeter und Klangforscher Peter Evans eingeladen, der hier Trompete und Piccolotrompete spielt, sowie den derzeit in Frankreich lebenden US-Bassisten Joe Sanders. Sanders, 1984 in Milwaukee geboren, studierte am „Brubeck Institute “bei Christian McBride sowie am „Thelonious Monk Institute“. In der New York Times beschrieb ihn der Saxofonist Joshua Redman als „einen der ganz Großen seiner Generation und einen der aktivsten und am meisten nachgeahmten Musiker der heutigen Szene.“ Sanders spielte neben Redman unter anderem auch mit Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock und Charles Lloyd.

Ein spannendes und intimes Duo-Projekt von zwei der derzeit führenden europäisch-amerikanischen Improvisatorinnen steht mit dem Konzert der deutschen, in Brooklyn lebenden Saxofonistin Ingrid Laubrock und der polnischen, in Amsterdam lebenden Pianistin Marta Warelis auf dem Programm. Die am Berklee Institute for Jazz and Gender Justice, der Columbia University und der New School lehrende Saxofonistin und Komponistin Laubrock ist im Zentrum der heutigen Brooklyner Avantgarde, indem sie neue Wege gefunden hat, improvisierte Musik zu organisieren und zu verorten. Sie erkundet die Grenzen musikalische Grenzbereiche und erschafft vielschichtige, oftmals suggestive Klangwelten. Warelis wuchs in Polen auf, studierte in den Niederlanden und lebt seit 2014 in Amsterdam, wo sie unter anderem in kammermusikalischen Improvisations-Ensembles und Duo-Formationen spielt. 2022 veröffentlichte sie ihr Soloalbum „A Grain Of Earth“. Der Jazzkritiker Kevin Whitehead schwärmte, Warelis könne Blockakkorde herausknallen, Saiten rasseln lassen, Tasten spachteln und schlängelnde, singende Linien der rechten Hand abspulen. Dieses sehr besondere Duo verspricht Improvisationskunst auf höchstem Niveau.

"Umbra" is the second part of the album trilogy by Austrian pianist, electronic musician and composer Elias Stemeseder and German percussionist and founder of Plaist Records, Christian Lillinger, which stands for "genre-free" music. In "Umbra", too, historical instruments from the Baroque period such as the spinet are sonically alienated and expanded as an exploration of the physical principles of time and space. "Umbra" is conceived as a duo plus guests. Stemeseder and Lillinger have invited the New York trumpeter and sound researcher Peter Evans, who plays trumpet and piccolo trumpet here, as well as the US bassist Joe Sanders, who currently lives in France. Sanders, born in Milwaukee in 1984, studied at the Brubeck Institute with Christian McBride and at the Thelonious Monk Institute. In the New York Times, saxophonist Joshua Redman described him as "one of the greats of his generation and one of the most active and most imitated musicians on the scene today." In addition to Redman, Sanders has also played with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Charles Lloyd, among others.

An exciting and intimate duo project by two of today's leading European-American improvisers is on the programme with a concert by the German saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, who lives in Brooklyn, and the Polish pianist Marta Warelis, who lives in Amsterdam. Laubrock, a saxophonist and composer who teaches at the Berklee Institute for Jazz and Gender Justice, Columbia University and the New School, is at the centre of today's Brooklyn avant-garde, having found new ways to organise and situate improvised music. She explores the boundaries of musical frontiers and creates multi-layered, often evocative soundscapes. Warelis grew up in Poland, studied in the Netherlands and has lived in Amsterdam since 2014, where she plays in chamber music improvisation ensembles and duo formations, among others. In 2022 she released her solo album "A Grain Of Earth". Jazz critic Kevin Whitehead raved that Warelis can bang out block chords, rattle strings, spatulate keys and unwind meandering, singing right-hand lines. This very special duo promises improvisation at the highest level.
