Seitdem er Anfang der 1990er-Jahre auf der Szene aufgetaucht ist, gehört Kurt Rosenwinkel zu den wichtigen Neuerern im Jazz. Er hat für sein Instrument eine Klangästhetik entwickelt, mit der er die Jazzgitarre grundlegend verändert hat. Mit seinem Trio mit Gregory Hutchinson (Drums) und Dario Deidda (Bassgitarre) greift Rosenwinkel noch einmal einen Strang auf, den er vor 16 Jahren begonnen hatte zu knüpfen. Wie damals kombiniert er Originalkompositionen mit Jazzstandards – etwa „Ugly Beauty“ von Monk oder „Self Portrait In Three Colors“ von Mingus  –, spielt die einen so, als wären sie längst Klassiker geworden, und die anderen so, als hätte er sie gerade eben erst zu Papier gebracht. Zum Leben erweckt werden diese Songs durch das Zusammenspiel auf Augenhöhe der drei, wenn Hutchinson und Deidda an deren rhythmischen Fundament rütteln, während Rosenwinkel mit der Gitarre flirrende Girlanden weit in den tonalen Raum auswirft, die in Wellen über die Akkorde hinwegbranden lässt, um sie klangintensiv mit crisper Eleganz zu umspielen, so als ob sie diese schützend umschließen wollten.

Since he emerged on the scene in the early 1990s, Kurt Rosenwinkel has been one of the most important innovators in jazz. He has developed a sound aesthetic for his instrument with which he has fundamentally changed the jazz guitar. With his trio with Gregory Hutchinson (drums) and Dario Deidda (bass guitar), Rosenwinkel once again picks up on a thread that he began to weave 16 years ago. As back then, he combines original compositions with jazz standards - such as ‘Ugly Beauty’ by Monk or ‘Self Portrait In Three Colours’ by Mingus - playing some as if they had long since become classics and others as if he had only just put them down on paper. These songs are brought to life by the interplay between the three of them at eye level, when Hutchinson and Deidda shake their rhythmic foundations, while Rosenwinkel throws shimmering garlands far out into the tonal space with his guitar, which swirl over the chords in waves to surround them with crisp elegance, as if they were trying to protect them.
