Vor zwei Jahren war Marta Warelis als Pianistin im Quintett des Trompeters Dave Douglas auf der Cologne Jazzweek live zu erleben. In diesem Jahr kehrt sie als „Featured Artist“ nach Köln zurück. Eine zentrale Position im Schaffen der in Polen geborenen, seit 2014 erst in Amsterdam, nun in Berlin lebenden Warelis nimmt ihr Sextett mit Rhythmusgruppe und drei Bläser:innen plus Elektronik ein. Zentral auch deshalb, weil sie mit dieser Formation ihre Haltung als Improvisationskünstlerin deutlich machen kann. Für sie entstehe dann die kraftvollste Musik, hat die junge Pianistin einmal gesagt, wenn das eigene Ego ganz verschwunden sei. Anders gesagt bedeutet das, dass improvisierte Musik überhaupt nur dann funktionieren und das Publikum überzeugen kann, wenn sie zur Gemeinschaftsleistung geworden ist. Nur wenn das Individuum in einer Gruppe Gleichgesinnter aufgeht, lässt sich die Kraft von Musik herausstellen. Das demonstriert sie im Zusammenspiel mit den Musiker:innen ihres Sextetts, denen Spiritualität im Zusammensein und die Intuition im Miteinander weit mehr von Bedeutung ist als instrumentaltechnische Brillanz.

Two years ago, Marta Warelis performed live as a pianist in trumpeter Dave Douglas' quintet at the Cologne Jazzweek. This year, she returns to Cologne as ‘Featured Artist’. Her sextet with rhythm section and three wind players plus electronics occupies a central position in the work of Warelis, who was born in Poland, has lived in Amsterdam since 2014 and is currently based in Berlin. It is also central because this formation allows her to make her position as an improvisation artist clear. The young pianist once said that she creates the most powerful music when her own ego has completely disappeared. In other words, this means that improvised music can only work and convince the audience when it has become a collective effort. Only when the individual is absorbed into a group of like-minded people can the power of music be emphasised. She demonstrates this in her interplay with the musicians in her sextet, for whom spirituality in togetherness and intuition in co-operation are far more important than instrumental brilliance.
