Ambrose Akinmusire Solo

„Ich meine, vielleicht hatte ich alle Asse in der Hand, aber was war das für ein Spiel?“ Mit diesem Zitat der Schriftstellerin Joan Didion aus ihrem 1970 erschienenen Roman „Spiel dein Spiel“ überschrieb der US-amerikanische Trompeter Ambrose Akinmusire sein im letzten Jahr erschienenes, erstes Soloalbum „Beauty Is Enough“. Er nahm die 16 Stücke, die teilweise nur etwas mehr als eine Minute lang sind, 2022 in der im 16. Jahrhundert erbauten Pfarrkirche Saint-Eustache in Paris auf – ganz unbegleitet, nur mit dem Hall der Kirche und der Stimmung des Raumes. In seinen Liner Notes schrieb er, er betrachte das Album, das vollständig improvisiert ist, als eine Art Übergangsritus: So viele seiner Vorbilder auf der Trompete hätten an entscheidenden Punkten ihrer Karriere Soloalben gemacht, und an einem solchen Wendepunkt habe er sich befunden. Entstanden ist ein ruhiges, tief empfundenes Werk, das die Virtuosität Akinmusires zeigt, ohne dass diese aufgesetzt klingt. Sehr empfindsam ist auch der Titel „Self Portrait“: ungeschützt, suchend, sich ganz der Musik hingebend, sein Spiel spielend. 

Ernst Reijseger & Mario Forte

Ein außergewöhnlich spannendes Duo bilden der in Algerien geborene, französisch-italienische Geiger Mario Forte, der heute in New York lebt, und der niederländische Cellist Ernst Reijseger. Forte studierte unter anderem bei dem französischen Jazzgeiger Didier Lockwood und lehrt als Professor an der Universität Lausanne, wo er sein Orchesterprojekt String Lab Ensembl“ gründete. 2015 war Forte Mitbegründer des Artempo Festivals als künstlerischer Leiter, Komponist und Performer. Reijseger veröffentlichte bisher mehr als 50 Alben, darunter mit bedeutenden niederländischen und internationalen Jazz-Avantgardisten wie Misha Mengelberg, Han Bennink und Steve Lacy sowie mit klassischen Interpreten wie Yo Yo Ma, Giovanni Sollima oder dem Dutch Wind Ensemble. Als Komponist schrieb er Filmmusik für Werner Herzog und Shakespeares „Hamlet“ unter der Regie von Sam Gold. Auf ihrem gemeinsamen Album „Fata Morgana“ experimentieren sie mit akustisch-traditionellen Klängen und elektronischer Verfremdung, mit Jazz, Barockmusik, Minimal Music, Improvisation und Konzeption.

Ambrose Akinmusire Solo 

"I mean maybe I was holding all the aces, but what was the game?" With this quote from the writer Joan Didion from her 1970 novel "Play Your Game", the US trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire titled his first solo album "Beauty Is Enough", which was released last year. He recorded the 16 pieces, some of which are just over a minute long, in 2022 in the 16th century parish church of Saint-Eustache in Paris - completely unaccompanied, with just the reverberation of the church and the atmosphere of the room. In his liner notes, he wrote that he sees the album, which is entirely improvised, as a kind of rite of passage: so many of his role models on the trumpet had made solo albums at crucial points in their careers, and he had found himself at such a turning point. The result is a calm, deeply felt work that demonstrates Akinmusire's virtuosity without sounding contrived. The title "Self Portrait" is also very sensitive: unprotected, searching, giving himself completely to the music, playing his game.

Ernst Reijseger & Mario Forte

The French-Italian violinist Mario Forte, who was born in Algeria and now lives in New York, and the Dutch cellist Ernst Reijseger form an exceptionally exciting duo. Forte studied with the French jazz violinist Didier Lockwood, among others, and teaches as a professor at the University of Lausanne, where he founded his orchestral project "String Lab Ensembl". In 2015, Forte co-founded the Artempo Festival as artistic director, composer and performer. Reijseger has released more than 50 albums to date, including with major Dutch and international jazz avant-gardists such as Misha Mengelberg, Han Bennink and Steve Lacy, as well as with classical performers such as Yo Yo Ma, Giovanni Sollima and the Dutch Wind Ensemble. As a composer, he has written film music for Werner Herzog and Shakespeare's "Hamlet", directed by Sam Gold. On their joint album "Fata Morgana", they experiment with acoustic-traditional sounds and electronic alienation, jazz, baroque music, minimal music, improvisation and conception.
